Gail Sauter is a coastal Maine based painter who has lived for extended periods of time in Italy, England and Japan. She is a keen observer of the world around her as she travels with paintbox in hand, looking for spontaneous moments of unique beauty

My work is based on direct observation, but the paintings are developed from my visual memories — the after-image that remains in my mind’s eye. This process allows me to move freely between observation, memory and invention, expanding and distilling my original experience, and embroidering it to present an extraordinary moment of everyday life.
