Collection of Butler Institute of American Art

Butler Purchases Renner’s Pastel

The most recent acquisition to the Butler Institute of American Art’s permanent collection is Connie Renner’s pastel “Sargent’s Madam X.”  The Butler Institute of American Art, home of the Flora B. Giffuni Gallery of American Pastel Art, the only museum gallery in America devoted exclusively to pastel art, selected Ms. Renner’s work from the exhibition Pastel Society of America Members Show on exhibit December 21, 2008 through January 25, 2009.  The exhibition was curated by Dr. Lou Zona, Director of the Butler Institute, who selected works from PSA’s 36th Annual Exhibition, September 2008.

Preparing for the Thirty-Seventh Annual 2009

The primary mandate of the Pastel Society of America, a 36-year-old arts organization, is to promote professional standards of execution and presentation of work in pastel.  The Annual Juried International Exhibition of “Pastels Only” is held in the main gallery of the National Arts Club, New York , NY each September. The exhibit allows for presentation of cash and material awards to individual artists for outstanding works; acknowledges participating artists for excellence in the field; and helps to promote the finest examples of pastel to the general public, the professional art world, art students and art collectors.

The prospectus for the 37th 2009 Annual is available on this website on the Annual Exhibition page.  Take advantage of the opportunity to have your art exhibited with America ’s finest pastel artists and exposed to a highly critical and discerning audience of art professionals, collectors and an appreciative public situated in the center of the New York art world.

This year’s Annual award jurors will be three distinguished American artists.  They will award over $20,000 in prizes and cash.  The Art Spirit Foundation, Dianne B. Pastel Society of America is an association of professional and emerging artists who work in the pastel medium. Founded in 1972 by Flora Giffuni, PSA is the oldest pastel society in existence in America. PSA is a model for standards of excellence well recognized by the art community here and abroad. Through classes, workshops and demonstrations we attract and encourage new talent in the use of pastels.

PSA's annual juried exhibitions at the National Arts Club provide viewers with an opportunity to appreciate pastel as a lasting, permanent art form. In addition, PSA regularly organizes regional exhibitions for its members. PSA also sponsors an ongoing exhibition and research center for the study of pastel at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.

Artists interested in forming pastel societies in their own local areas are welcome to contact PSA for start-up assistance. Information regarding the Pastel Society of America can be found in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution. Details of our activities can be accessed by clicking on one of the categories at left.
