Applying for Membership Non-members who wish to apply for membership in PSA must submit an application form along with three samples of their work. All subjects and styles are welcome, from the traditional to the contemporary. Whatever the style, there should be a consistency of artistry among the three samples of one's work, and the images themselves should be of high technical quality. There should be no visible surroundings, such as frames or easels. The application form gives a full explanation of the requirements. Application forms are available on the PSA Web site and may also be obtained by calling, e-mailing or sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to PSA's office. There are two levels of membership: Associate and Signature. The Jury of Admissions determines if the applicant meets the standards of professional excellence required for Signature status. If the Jury of Admissions does not confer Signature status, it may decide that the applicant qualifies for Associate artist membership. After being accepted at the Associate level, the artist is free to apply for Signature status at a future time. By special arrangement with The National Arts Club, where PSA's office and school are located, all artist members, Signature and Associate, may use the Club's private dining room. Signature and Associate members receive the Pastelagram, have their names listed on PSA’s Web site, and are eligible to participate in juried shows sponsored by PSA for its members at various sites. To date, the Pastel Society of America has more than 900 members carefully selected from the thousands of applications received. Signature artist members are privileged to use the PSA initials after their name, a meaningful designation for the art community and for potential art buyers. They have the opportunity to become Master Pastelists after winning prizes at three annual shows. Signature members are also eligible for an expanded listing on the PSA Web site, with samples of their work displayed, and they are entitled to purchase a membership scroll and pin. Becoming a Signature Member For the past several years, Signature status could be acquired only by being juried during the application process. It is still possible for Associate members to choose to be juried for Signature membership by once again submitting work, along with an application for change of membership status (forms available on the Web site and through PSA's office). Additionally, in December 2009, the membership of the Pastel Society of America approved the following amendment to the By-Laws: "Signature artist status will be conferred upon any artist who is accepted into three (3) PSA Annual Exhibitions and who has been a dues-paying Associate member for every year following his or her first Annual Exhibition acceptance. It shall be the artist's responsibility to notify PSA and provide the necessary verification." |
