BiographyAlden Baker was born into a family of artists. Both of her parents were art teachers of note and she learned ear1y what good painting was and was not. An art critic said of her work, "Countless artists produce pastel paintings, but few handle light and color with Baker's passionate expertise".
Baker studied at the Art Students League and seven summers with colorist Henry Hensche in Provincetown, MA. Since then, she has won 19 first place and four best-in-show awards as well as two recent $1000. awards: the Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Giffuni Award at the Pastel Society of America and the Annual Combined Exhibition's Dianne Bernhard Gold Medal Award at the Salmagundi Club.
Currently the President of the Art Centre of N.J., she is also Corresponding Secretary and Critiques Chairman of the PSA where she earned the title of Master Pastelist. She is also an active member of the Salmagundi Club, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the American Artist Professional League, the Pen & Brush Inc. and others.
A resident of New Jersey, Ms. Baker works primarily in pastel which she terms "A marvelously transportable, colorful and colorfast medium". She paints portraits, still life and landscape and has given pastel demonstrations in Xian and Nanchang, China as well as throughout the metropolitan area. |
