We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the young talented pastel artist Akiko Hoshino. Akiko died Thursday October 28, 2010 in New York City from injuries sustained on Saturday evening when struck by a car driving backwards as she crossed the street. Her mother and brother flew from Japan to be with her. Her dramatic and accomplished figurative pastels received awards in the PSA Annual the first time that she entered the exhibition in 2007 -- again in 2008 and received the Master Pastelist status in 2009. Akiko’s unique and visionary work was exhibited in the Flora B. Gifunni Gallery of Pastel, The Butler Institute of American Art in 2009. She also exhibited her pastels in the Allied Artist Association exhibitions at The Salmagundi Club. Akiko studied at the Art Student's League. Her photograph is on view in the lobby of the school and grieving friends have left flowers. At this time there are no plans for a memorial. The world of pastel has lost a great talent and wonderful human being. We express our condolences to her mother and family.
