Biography I always painted. Today, I work in plein air using all mediums: pastel, watercolor and oil. I prefer pastel. It allows for immediate translation of that ‘first response’ to what is seen… felt… surrounded or suffused in light…interpreted on site…or just caught in memory as a moment in time. This is the demand of the pastel medium for me, and the joy in using it.
Subject matter: the landscape and just those ordinary objects around us. Light magnifies their presence while colors ask for interpretation.
Three NYC artists were instrumental to my development as an artist.
Initially, at age 11, Greta Matson Khouri ,who was a member of the NY Ashcan School, asked me to join her adult class at the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences; now the Chrysler Museum. Later teachers were Philip Pearlstein and Lennart Anderson who taught studio art during my post graduate study at Brooklyn College.
During that time, I had the good fortune of working part time at the Brooklyn Museum Conservation Laboratory. It was there that I learned from paintings in need of restoration via conservation lab x-ray!
I have a BA in English/Art History from Trinity College. Washington, DC.
In 2000, I discovered pastel as a medium at an Albert Handell workshop in Taos, NM. Soon thereafter, in NYC, I was able to study with Wolf Kahn at the National Academy of Art.
By 2007, I was honored with Signature Membership in the Pastel Society of America. I also hold the same designation in both the Connecticut Pastel Society (2004), and the Connecticut Watercolor Society (1999). In 2000, I was asked to jury the prestigious NYC Scholastic Magazine Art and Writing Awards. At the same time, I was selected for membership in Connecticut Women Artists Inc.
