Biography Gail E. Sauter, Master Pastelist, uses the metaphor of water to explore the passing of time and change. "I seek to capture and hold an instant of fleeting and spontaneous movement as light passes across the surface of water while the illusion of depth hints at mysteries that lie below. Together, they combine to reveal a sense of time and timelessness residing in the same space." Sauter's work requires careful and focused observation of the water's movement and the play of light, but she finds that she must let go of this as she begins to paint so the work can flow. Painting is an evolving process and as the piece develops, the paint, and how it is applied, become equally as important as the subject matter. "I use the qualities of the pigments themselves - transparency/opacity, texture and density - to express the various elements within my subject and to bring a contemporary perspective to the traditional aspects of landscape painting." Sauter teaches painting, leads workshops and gives demonstrations in pastel. Her work has won awards nationally and internationally including at the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club, and the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Arts Club in New York City. Her paintings have been featured in numerous solo and invitational exhibitions in Italy, Great Britain, France, Canada and across the United States.
