Biography Phil Laughlin, PSA is a devoted pastel painter living and working full time in Vermont. Phil's work is an outstanding example of pastels used as a painting medium, an idea that has gained wide currency in recent years. His surfaces are rich and luminous, built with decisive brushwork and a lush application of color. In his capable hands pastels compete effectively against mediums with a longer and more substantial history. Phil paints mainly landscapes and works from photo reference in his studio. He carries his digital camera with him in the field to gather information. If a particular scene is of interest he will take several shots with slight variations. On a computer monitor, in the comfort of the studio, he reviews the images and selects the best one or even combines features from several. Photo prints have inherent limitations as reference but he handily works around this by building the color structure of his paintings from within the pastel palette rather than relying too heavily on the photo reference. The resulting works display rich vibrant color that maintains it's resiliency throughout the tonal range. Phil has exhibited widely and been the recipient of many awards. In 2008, his pastel painting, 'Reeds' received the second place award in the Bryan Memorial Gallery Land and Light Show, a highly competitive New England show featuring some of the best landscape and plein air painters in America. He studied at the Art Students League in New York under Americo DiFranza, PSA, Yale University as a recipient of the Ellen B. Stoeckel Fellowship and Worcester Museum Art, SC. |
