Foster Caddell

Biography

Foster Caddell developed a strong interest in drawing, in childhood, and has been fortunate to have been involved in art his entire life. At seventeen he joined the art department of a lithograph company. In World War II he did poster and propaganda work. He returned to the lithograph company after the war, but at age 30 decided to try freelance work. He did illustrations for juvenile and school books, as well as paintings for many religions. Local people asked him to teach art lessons; his classes started with four students and grew to be the largest privately owned art school in New England. Consequently, many magazine articles were written about him, and eventually he himself wrote four instructional painting books. He has done portraits of many prominent business and government figures.

Mr. Caddell began working with pastel in the 1950's when it was still a 'much neglected' medium, and as a master pastelist was inducted into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame in 1998. He is as adept at portraiture as he is landscapes and still life.

He continues to teach classes, part time, at his Connecticut school, and workshops on a selective basis. in this country and abroad.
