Maceo Mitchell received his bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) degree in drawing and printmaking, from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 1966, and his Master of Arts (M.A.) in printmaking from the University of Iowa in 1969. Past professional activities include professor of drawing and design at Macomb County Community College in Warren, Michigan (1969–1976); instructor of art at the Harlem School of the Arts in New York City (1984–86 and 1989–91); instructor of art United Nations International School (1986–88); artist-in-residence at the Shady Hills School, Cambridge, Massachusetts (1996–2001); and instructor at the Flora B. Giffuni School of Pastels (2003–present), and director of the school (2005–present).
