Growing up on a cattle ranch in southwestern Montana definitely influenced her to become a landscape painter. When only seven years old, she visited a painter in a small home next to the 1860’s two-room school house where she went to school. Seeing a large, beautiful painting on the artist’s easel, Colleen knew she wanted to be an artist, too.
Colleen attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah to study drawing and painting. She also took individual instruction from Sally Strand, Michael Workman and T. Allen Lawson. Articles about her work have been published in The Artist’s Magazine, American Artist and the Pastel Journal. Her work also appears in books such as, Painters of Utah’s Canyons and Deserts, Sun on My Back, Dust on My Shoes, and Art Journey America LANDSCAPES. She is an invited artist to the prestigious Dixie Invitational in St. George, Utah and is an invited artist at Maynard Dixon Country in Mt. Carmel, Utah.
Besides her artwork, Colleen greatly enjoys teaching landscape painting. She teaches across the U.S. and also in France. She teaches the importance of value structure, composition and color harmony.
Colleen’s work is in permanent collections at the University of Utah, O. C. Tanner, Co. and many private collections. Her work may be viewed online at www.colleenhowe.com. She lives and works in Smithfield, Utah.
