Biography

Joe Hing Lowe came to the United States from his native China in 1950. In 1958 he began formal art training. He won a 5-year scholarship from the Salmagundi Club and later pursued private studies. He studied with Bill Lawrence, Daniel Green and Lajos Markos. He has won many awards, including two American Artists Professional League Gold Medals, a National Arts Club Silver Medal, Allied Artists, Hudson Valley Art Association and Salmagundi Club awards, and the 1989 Exceptional Merit Award from the Pastel Society. He is a PSA master pastelist and is the society’s 1991 Hall of Fame Honoree.

He is listed in Who's Who in American Art and has been featured in articles in Palette Talk, Artists Magazine, and The New York Times. His works are represented in private and public collections. His pastel portrait of PSA founder, Flora B. Giffuni, is in the permanent collection of the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. Lowes work also appears in The Best of Pastel 2 and The Best of Sketching and Drawing (Rockport Publishers).

After thirty years of maintaining teaching studios in NYC, Mr. Lowe now resides in Cranford, NJ. He teaches in his private studio and at the Ridgewood Art Institute, Ridgewood, NJ. Lowe says that knowledge is like gold in his pocket - gold that is unselfishly shared with his many students.
